SOME NEW BOOKS TO TRY FROM LITTLE FALLS LIBRARY DECEMBER 2007

Here's some of our newer YA books that you might want to try:

My mother the cheerleader by Robert Sharenow in which 13 year old Louise uncovers secrets about her family and her neighborhood that occurred during school desegregation in 1960 New Orleans.

Exploits of a reluctant (but extremely goodlooking hero) by Maureen Fergus in which our unlikely hero is forced to "volunteer" in a soup kitchen. It's a cause he couldn't care less about until he stumbles across a shocking piece of information. What happens next surprises everyone.

How it happened in Peach Hill by Marthe Jocelyn in which 15 year old Annie is forced, by her mother, to pose as an idiot in order to spy on neighbors and then provide her mother, "Madame Caterina," with "the dirt" on them. Her mother then poses as Madame Caterina, a seer who seems to know all about everyone. One day, however, Annie decides to take charge of her own life.

SPEAK WINS THE VOTE!

I hope everyone is having an enjoyable week! The votes are in and Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson is the winner! I hope everyone will enjoy this book. I can't wait to read it myself. We just ordered two copies for the West Paterson library, Little Falls has a copy, and I recall Mrs. Krautheim saying that Totowa also has it available on Audiobook. I'm not sure if there are copies in the PV Library; please check with Mrs. Konzelmann. We can also get copies from other libraries in the Pals Plus Consortium.

Also, if anyone is having trouble signing up on the blog, please e-mail me.

Have a great day!

DON'T FORGET!

Don't forget to tell your friends they're still welcome even if they missed the first meeting, and of course, let them know that they'll have until February to read the book.

Book Summaries

Here are some short descriptions (primarily from the catalog descriptions) of the books. Hopefully, this will help you make your choice. It's going to be tough...they all seem great!

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson - A traumatic event near the end of the summer has a devastating effect on Melinda's freshman year in high school. Her old friends won’t talk to her and everyone seems to hate her. The plot is gripping and the characters powerful. Speak is a raw and straightforward look at the dynamics of Melinda’s high school experience and how she becomes whole again.
Sold by Patricia McCormick - Thirteen-year-old Lakshmi, though poor, enjoys her life until the Himalayan monsoons wash away her family's crops and she is sold to a brothel in India by her stepfather. She remembers her mother's wisdom, "Simply to endure is to triumph," until the day comes that she can reclaim her life.
Sims by F. Paul Wilson - Sims takes place in the very near future, when the science of genetics is fulfilling its vaunted potential. It's a world where genetically transmitted diseases are being eliminated. A world where dangerous or boring manual labor is gradually being transferred to "sims," genetically altered chimps who occupy a gray zone between simian and human.
Deadline by Chris Crutcher - Given the medical diagnosis of one year to live, high school senior Ben Wolf decides to fulfill his greatest fantasies, ponders his life's purpose and legacy, and converses through dreams with a spiritual guide known as "Hey-Soos."
Saint Iggy by K.L. Going - Iggy Corso, who lives in city public housing, is caught physically and spiritually between good and bad when he is kicked out of high school, goes searching for his missing mother, and causes his friend to get involved with the same dangerous drug dealer who deals to his parents.
